Writing Guidelines
Step 1: Understand your audience.
Before you start to write, have a clear understanding of what Whole Magazine is about. What do the readers want to know about? What will resonate with them? Read through some of our old posts and get a feel of how we write.
Step 2: Start with a topic and working title.
Before you do anything, you need to have a topic for your article. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit how you can be used in this area. After you know your topic, you need to create a working title. What's the difference? A topic is general, while a working title is specific and will guide your post so you can start writing. This is what will catch their attention. It will tell your reader if they want to continue reading. Be creative.
Step 3: Write an intro (and make it captivating).
First, grab the reader's attention. If you lose the reader in the first few paragraphs of the introduction, they will stop reading even though they haven't given your post a fair chance. Then, show the purpose of the post and explain how it will address a topic, issue the reader may be having or struggling with. This will give the reader a reason to keep reading and give them a connection to how it will help them.
Step 4: Organize your content.
Sometimes, articles can have an overwhelming amount of information -- for the reader and the writer. Be sure to organize the information so readers are not intimidated by the length or amount of content. The organization can take multiple forms -- sections, lists, tips, scriptures, quotes, etc. But it must be organized!
Step 5: Write the content.
Pray, Pray, Pray. Always pray before writing your article to ensure that the Holy Spirit is constantly leading and that your message is God-breathed. Use your outline as the guide and be sure to expand on all of your points as needed. Write about what you feel comfortable talking about, and do additional research, if necessary, to gather more information.
Step 6: Edit your post, pray, and then submit!
you're done! Pray and ask God that the words you have written will bless and reach the ones that need to hear this message. Wait! Before you hit that send button, please take a moment to look over your post to see if you find any punctuation or grammatical errors. Although we have an editing team, it is YOUR responsibility to send us a post free of errors. (Posts with multiple errors will be sent back to you and will not be published until you have edited it.) Hit send and wait one to three weeks for a response.
